If you've lived in Redding through a summer, you already know what the sun can do out here. What you may not know is how hard that same sun is working on your roof.
Redding sits in the northern end of the Sacramento Valley, one of the hottest inhabited corners of California. July is our hottest month, with average high temperatures around 109.8°F based on more than four decades of records, and the all-time record hit a blistering 118.4°F in July 2024.1 That kind of heat, repeated day after day for months, is one of the single biggest factors in how long a roof lasts.
What heat actually does to asphalt shingles
An asphalt shingle is, at its core, a mat coated in asphalt and topped with protective mineral granules. Those granules are the roof's sunscreen: they shield the asphalt underneath from ultraviolet radiation. Heat and UV exposure cause the asphalt binder to oxidize, dry out, and lose its flexibility over time, and in hot climates that process is dramatically accelerated.2
The damage tends to show up in a predictable sequence. Shingles become brittle, then you start to see cracks near the edges or down the center of individual shingles.3 Trapped moisture beneath the surface can rise and form heat blisters that rupture and leave weak spots.3 As granules wear away, the exposed asphalt deteriorates even faster: one roofing company compares it to sunscreen fading off your skin.4 A roof rarely fails all at once; it gives you these warnings first.5
The bottom line on lifespan is sobering. While asphalt shingles are often quoted at 15 to 30 years, that same shingle that might last close to 28 years in a mild, cloudy climate can be finished in 15 years in a hot one.2 Industry roundups put realistic lifespan in hot climates at roughly 10 to 20 years, depending heavily on shingle quality and ventilation.6
The attic is half the battle
Here's the part that surprises people: a lot of heat damage happens from underneath the shingles, not just on top.
The heat radiating off a sun-baked roof drives downward into the attic. Without adequate ventilation, that heat and the moisture that builds up with it get trapped, and they slowly cook the underlayment and the shingles from below.3 According to the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, a poorly ventilated attic can reach 140°F on a day that's only 90°F outside.7 In Redding, where 90°F is a mild summer afternoon, you can imagine how extreme an unvented attic gets.
Good attic ventilation is one of the most effective things you can do about it. Proper balanced airflow can extend a roof's lifespan by an estimated 5 to 10 years by reducing thermal stress and preventing moisture buildup.8
How to get more years out of your roof in this climate
You can't change the weather, but you can change how your roof handles it. A few things genuinely move the needle:
Choose a quality shingle. Thicker architectural and impact-rated shingles handle the constant expansion and contraction of heat far better than basic 3-tab products, which have the shortest life of any asphalt option and wear fastest under direct sun.9 This is a big part of why we build with premium systems like Malarkey rather than the cheapest shingle on the shelf.
Get the ventilation right. A balanced intake-and-exhaust system (cool air entering low at the eaves, hot air escaping high near the ridge) is what keeps your attic from becoming an oven. We'll cover exactly how that works in another article, but it's not optional in a climate like ours.
Consider lighter colors. Lighter-colored shingles reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat, which can reduce thermal stress on the roof and may extend its life in hot climates.10
Have it inspected. After a roof passes about 15 years (or after any severe weather), it's worth having a professional take a look, especially in a punishing climate.11 Catching cracking, curling, or granule loss early is far cheaper than dealing with a leak later.
The takeaway
None of this means asphalt is a bad choice for Redding. It's still the most popular residential roofing material in the country, and a well-built, well-ventilated asphalt roof serves this area well. It just means that how the roof is built matters more here than it would somewhere mild. Quality materials, correct ventilation, and honest installation are what stand between our summers and a roof that ages before its time.
If your roof is getting up there in years, or you're seeing curling, cracking, or bald spots where the granules have worn away, we're happy to take a look and give you a straight answer about where it stands. That's what a free estimate is for.
