Asphalt or Metal? Choosing the Right Roof for a Redding Home

By Loomis Roofing

When it's time to re-roof a home in the Redding area, most homeowners are choosing between two materials: asphalt shingles and metal. Both are proven, both can perform beautifully here, and neither is universally "better." The right choice comes down to your budget, how long you plan to own the home, and what you want out of the roof. Here's an honest look at how they compare.

Lifespan: the biggest difference

This is where the two materials diverge most.

A quality asphalt shingle roof generally lasts somewhere in the 15-to-30-year range, though in a hot climate like ours the realistic figure often lands closer to 10 to 20 years because of accelerated UV and heat aging.1 Premium and architectural shingles push the upper end of that range and hold up better against thermal stress than basic products.2

Metal roofing plays in a different league on longevity. Industry sources note that a metal roof can last far longer than asphalt: one roofing expert estimates a properly cared-for metal roof can last up to 100 years, versus roughly 15 to 25 years for basic asphalt shingles.3 For a homeowner planning to stay in a house for the long haul, that difference is significant.

Upfront cost: the other big difference

The tradeoff for that longevity is the price tag. Asphalt shingles are popular in large part because they're affordable and straightforward to install, which keeps costs down.4 Metal roofing typically costs more upfront, both in materials and installation.

So the honest framing is this: asphalt is usually the lower initial cost, while metal is a higher initial cost that can pay back over a much longer service life. Which one "wins" depends heavily on how long you plan to keep the home and whether you'd rather spend less now or less over the decades.

How each handles Redding's climate

Our climate is demanding: summer highs averaging around 109.8°F in July, a record of 118.4°F in July 2024, and cold, wet winters with December lows near 25°F.5 Both materials can handle it, but they handle it differently.

Asphalt is vulnerable to the heat. Intense sun and UV dry out and age the asphalt binder, and without good attic ventilation, trapped heat cooks the shingles from below.6 The keys to making asphalt last here are choosing a quality shingle, getting the ventilation right, and (an easy win) considering a lighter color, since lighter shingles reflect more sunlight and absorb less heat, reducing thermal stress.7

Metal is naturally reflective and tends to shed heat rather than absorb and hold it, and it isn't subject to the granule loss and UV breakdown that ends an asphalt roof's life. It also sheds rain and the occasional snow readily, which suits our wet winters. Its long lifespan is a large part of its appeal in a climate that's hard on roofs.

Whichever you choose, the fundamentals still apply: proper attic ventilation and quality installation matter enormously, because in a climate with both hot summers and cold winters, a roof takes stress from heat and moisture alike.8

Impact resistance and durability

If durability against physical damage is a priority, it's worth knowing about impact ratings. The highest is Class 4 (impact-resistant), and premium shingles with advanced polymer technology are designed to resist hail, high winds, and thermal cracking.9 This is one reason we build with modern premium shingle systems rather than basic 3-tab products, which have the shortest life of any asphalt option.4 Metal roofing is also highly durable and long-lasting by nature. Either way, the goal is a roof matched to the conditions it actually has to survive.

So which should you choose?

There's no single right answer, but here's a useful way to think about it:

Asphalt shingles make sense if you want a lower upfront cost, you like the traditional look, or you're not certain you'll be in the home for decades. With quality materials, correct ventilation, and honest installation, a good asphalt roof serves Redding homes well.

Metal makes sense if you're planning to stay long-term, you want the longest possible service life, and you're comfortable with a higher upfront investment for a roof you may never have to replace.

The one thing we'd steer anyone away from is choosing purely on the lowest bid. The cheapest shingle installed poorly over a badly ventilated attic will fail early no matter what, and in this climate, "early" comes fast. Quality materials and a careful install are what make either choice worth the money.

The takeaway

Both asphalt and metal are solid, proven choices for a Redding-area home. Asphalt trades some longevity for a friendlier upfront price; metal trades a higher upfront price for a roof that can outlast you. The best decision is the one that fits your budget and how long you plan to stay, and that starts with an honest conversation about your specific home.
